iGMT: Interactive Mapping of Geoscientific Datasets

Some comments on different GMT versions

Updated information on GMT Versions:

The latest release of GMT is 3.4. Currently we are running iGMT under GMT 3.4 without major problems. Moreover, the previous GMT-versions 3.3.4 to 3.3.6 were succesfully tested. Recently, we experienced problems with the annotations when using -JM or -JQ projections with a global map (only -180 to 180 longitude range). In fact, the W and E annotations are not plotted, whatever the -B option was set. It seems to be a GMT problem and it was already reported to the GMT community.

Alex, in August 2001

After a long time without any new releases of the Generic Mapping Tools (GMT) after version 3.0 (dating from 1991, I guess) all of a sudden lots of updates were being put out and we tried to keep up with our iGMT, staying compatible, and making use of the new features such as selection of color-schemes for color-tables. However, the authors of GMT went so quick with different releases that Alex and I can't really keep up with installing all the new stuff.

So, while iGMT version 1.0 was explicitly designed for GMT version 3.0, iGMT version 1.1 should be fine with either 3.0, 3.1, 3.2, or 3.3 and we tried to build in some flexibility in iGMT version 1.2, allowing for different binary distributions.

Since I do not really have the time to look after our installation of GMT here at Harvard, I am still running 3.0 and am only using GMT 3.3.1 for some little things. Alex has 3.2 running at GFZ, I guess, and we try to check if iGMT has problems with any of the new settings. (Luckily enough, we don't interact with GMT at a low level but only through scripts which makes things compatible almost without any modifications.)

Anyhow, please excuse us for not being up to date with all the new GMT developments. It's just a matter of time and neither Alex or I are getting paid to do any of the iGMT business.

Regards,

Thorsten, in November 1999
