Educational Resources
Due to our affiliation with the Ohio State University and because so many of our scientists are teachers, we have a deep commitment to education. We regularly invite fellow teachers, students and the general public to the Center for tours and lectures.
In this section, we link to some resources for educators who are interested in incorporating BPRC's research into their curriculum. Lesson plans and resources are grouped by grade band and topic, as much as possible.
The Learning Center
The Learning Center at the Byrd Polar Research Center provides a comfortable area for guest teachers and students. The Learning Center is equipped with wireless internet, SMART technology and Go-Link software for learning enhancement.
During Winter Quarter 2009, Dr. Lonnie Thompson will use the resources in the Learning Center to teach a graduate-level course through the use of Polycomm videoconferencing. Students who are enrolled in the course will be tuning in from as far away as Beijing, China.
BPRC scientists utilize the Learning Center for their bi-monthly meeting with CReSIS partners.
Outreach
The Byrd Polar Research Center collaborates with many local, state and national education projects. The Center is currently working with the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium to enhance its "Polar Frontier" exhibit.
The Byrd Polar Research Center is a co-sponsor of Breakfast of Science Champions. The Breakfast of Science Champions is a program which aims to provide middle school students with a introductory look at college education.
