Byrd Polar Research Center

Group Tours

We do our best to accommodate those who are interested in touring the Byrd Polar Research Center, whether it is for an intense scientific inquiry or simply to see what type of research goes on at the Center. A visit that is more scientific in nature is more likely to get the opportunity to hear from the scientists themselves, however, this is not always possible. The scientists are generally available for one tour per month, but other arrangement for a tour can sometimes be made.

To find out if we can accommodate your group, please fill out the Tour Application below.

You may also want to consider having someone from the Center visit your classroom. If so, please go to the School Visit page and fill out an application.

Tour Details

  • Tours for up to 50 people can be arranged according to the interests and backgrounds of our visitors.
  • A tour of BPRC allows your group to see the different facilities and to hear directly from some of the scientists who work at the center. They will give you background information on their area of expertise and explain some of the science behind their research.
  • Typically, large groups are divided into 2 or 3 smaller groups, and a plan is devised to enable all members of the group to visit each session. We will structure the tour to address your group's needs. The time spent at BPRC is usually two hours or less.

Group Tour Application

Transportation:

[Please note that parking for school buses is free, but others will need parking passes to park in the West Campus parking lots. The cost of each pass is $5.00 and the Byrd Center will provide them for you at that cost. You will only be responsible for paying for the passes you use on the day of the tour. The passes will be handed out when you arrive at the Center.]

Reason for Requesting Tour: Please be as specific as possible as this will help us in planning what is best for your group. What do you want your students to learn or gain from the tour? If applicable, briefly outline subjects you have covered in your classroom.
