The Environmental Geochemistry group at the Byrd Polar Research Center conducts research in several areas including long-term ecological studies in Antarctica, the biogeochemistry of mercury both regionally and in Antarctica, chemical and physical weathering in alpine areas particularly high standing oceanic islands, and the impact of agricultural activities and urbanization on surface waters. - 2008-2009 Antarctic Field Team - Undergraduate student Catherine Maxwell, graduate students Deb Leslie and Kelly Deuerling, Kathy Welch, and Chris Gardner.
- 2007-2008 Antarctic Field Team - Dr Berry Lyons, Ph.D., undergraduate student Gregg McElwee, Kathy Welch, and Chris Gardner.
- 2006-2007 Antarctic Field Team - Dr. Berry Lyons, Ph.D., student Becki Witherow, M.S., student Kelly Carroll, and Byrd Fellow, Dr. Joel Barker, Kathy Welch, and Chris Gardner.
- Liz Miller and April Jacobs, both undergraduate students in the Department of Geological Sciences at The Ohio State University and work study students for Dr. Lyons, traveled to Antarctica in December 2005 to conduct and assist with research. Read more at Students to Chill in Antarctica.
- Kate Harris, an undergraduate student from the University of North Carolina, travelled to Antarctica in 2004 with the Lyons' research group to study ephemeral ground seeps. Read more about her adventures. She is currently a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University in England.
