The Environmental Geochemistry group at Byrd Polar Research Center conducts research in several areas
including long-term ecological studies in Antarctica, the biogeochemistry of mercury both regionally
and in Antarctica, chemical and physical weathering in alpine areas particularly high standing oceanic
islands, and the impact of agricultural activities and urbanization on surface waters. Select the

Liz Miller and April Jacobs, both undergraduate students in the Department of Geological Sciences
at The Ohio State University and work study students for Dr. Lyons, traveled to Antarctica
in December 2005 to conduct and assist with research. Read more at

Kate Harris, an undergraduate student from the University of North Carolina, travelled to
Antarctica in 2004 with the Lyons' research group to study ephemeral ground seeps.
